Dog Proof Trash Can Reviews
iTouchless Deodorizer Sensor Trash Can
The infrared sensor used to open the lid is very effective. It has a deodorizing filter that eliminates smells. Weighing 8 pounds, its heavier weight reduces the chances of your pup knocking it over.
The iTouchless is true to its name – it is 100% touchless. Simply move your hand in front of the sensor to open the lid automatically. It is a convenient and hygienic choice that doesn’t allow your pup to knock off the lid.
The natural carbon filter absorbs and neutralizes odors from the trash, making sure your home smells clean and fresh, and ensuring that your dog will not be attracted to the smell of meat or leftovers.
The garbage can only draw power when it needs it. The iTouchless requires 4 D batteries that last 3 times as long as other sensory trash cans. The batteries normally only need to be replaced every 1.5 to 2 years, but if you do not want to use batteries, you can purchase the AC adapter.
The fingerprint-proof, germ-resistant stainless steel surface is quick and easy to clean. The rectangular shape allows you to easily place it in any corner or space. Common 13 gallon trash liners fit in this bin, so you don’t need to purchase custom bags.
The wide 12 inch lid opening allows you to effortlessly dispose of bulkier items. The retainer ring stops the liner from falling, while the air vents prevent airlocks from happening when removing the bag. The base has a no-skid rubber base, providing extra protection against your pup knocking it over.

What I like
You open this trash can with a motion sensor. The deodorizer minimizes smells but also decreases the level of interest your pup has in what is in the bin, especially if your dog digs in the trash for leftovers.
What I don’t like
Some users complained that the motor makes a noise when the lid is opening and closing. The deodorizer and batteries are located at the bottom of the trash can, which makes access tricky.

The semi-round shape allows you to place it against the kitchen wall, providing extra support for the trash can. The large capacity makes it ideal for family use, and also means you do not need to take the trash bag out as often, limiting your dog’s access to the garbage.
The plastic is durable and easy to clean, while the soft wall bumper prevents the trash can from bumping against the wall. This bin has a sliding lock that keeps the bin shut and secure, making it near impossible for your dog to get into.

What I don’t like
The trash can is quite costly. Some users stated that attaching the lid is quite tricky. However, as hard as it is to attach, is as hard as it is for your dog to detach.
Ninestars Motion Sensor Trash Can
This sturdy trash can weighs a solid 10.3 pounds, making it difficult for your pooch to knock it over. Its large 21.1 gallon capacity is also very impressive. Plus, the 2 year warranty speaks to its quality.
This oval-shaped 21.1 gallon garbage bin is able to fit in most areas in your home. This trash can has the most advanced sensor technology that ensures a smooth opening when your hand is placed within 10 inches of the sensor at a 130° angle – this makes it even tougher for Fido to get into it.
The trash can requires 3 D batteries which last for up to 6 months with normal daily use. The garbage bag ring keeps the trash liner hidden from view, tucked neatly away where you pup can’t reach it.
Its super-size capacity and wide opening make it very user friendly. The sleek design allows it to effortlessly fit into any environment. The 2 year warranty included speaks to its high quality. The energy saving sleep mode makes the batteries last 20% longer. The bin also has a manual open/close button. The non-skid base makes it even harder for your pooch to move or knock the can over. You can use any 21 gallon trash liner with this can. Plus, the stainless steel build is fingerprint-resistant.

What I like

What I don’t like
The closing and opening of the lid is not as fast as some users hoped. Other users reported that customer support took a long time to reply to enquiries.
Rubbermaid Commercial Step Can
While this trash can is not specifically designed as a dog-proof bin, if you have smaller dogs, this bin will be like Fort Knox. The foot pedal, heavy lid, and strong construction material make this a worthy bin for owners of small trash-loving dogs.
This Rubbermaid Commercial step can is a great solution if you have small dogs that regularly find their way into your trash can. The lid is heavy and the foot pedal allows for the attached lid which makes it harder for your dog to get into the garbage.
The strong stainless steel construction makes this bin a chew-proof option. The odor-limiting gasket rim reduces smells while reducing contact with any infectious waste as you do not use your hands to operate the Rubbermaid Commercial can.
The rigid liner is leak-proof and there are steel retainer bands used to secure the poly bags within the trash can so your dog can’t latch on to the liner and pull the bin over.
- Maximum infectious waste and odor control.

What I like
This unit has been incredible well-constructed, and the steel shell provides great protection to the can. While large dogs may be able to lift the lid, smaller pups will not be able to access this bin.
What I don’t like
Unfortunately, the lid is not lockable which makes it easy for larger dogs to get into. The trash can is quite pricey due to its steel construction.
Toter Heavy Duty Trash Can
This trash can is a little bit overkill, but it is ideal if you have an especially problematic pup. It is one of the toughest trash cans around, giving even the most determined dog a virtually impossible challenge.
The Toter trash can has a double walled lid that boasts a steel reinforced rim that has ¼ inch steel hinges and a lock that can be closed to keep your pups out. It is compatible with semi-automated and fully-automated curbside waste collection truck lifters.

What I like
If you have a problem with your pups getting into your trash, but you want a fairly normal looking garbage can, this is a great option. It is very durable and it has a massive capacity, so you don’t need to leave any of your trash out.
What I don’t like
The larger size is better suited for outdoor use while the small size is best for indoors, but you pay almost the same price for both.
There are so many things you need to consider when selecting a dog-proof trash can. There is also such a wide variety of trash cans available that it can be hard to choose one. Let’s look at a few of the key features to bear in mind when looking at a trash can that suits your needs.
Key Feature #1: Sizes and Capacity
The general rule of thumb is that the bigger the trash can, the more stable it is. While large trash cans may be a bit trickier to place in your kitchen, they are convenient in terms of serving your entire family without needing to take the trash bag out regularly – another problem if you have a dumpster-diving dog – but they do provide stability. If you have a small dog, naturally you can get away with a smaller can, but if you have a large pooch, you want to find a heavy, sturdy bin that won’t move when he tries to move it.
Key Feature #2: Dimensions
Before you purchase a dog-proof trash can, measure the space where you would like to situate it. Be sure to measure not only the length and width, but the height as well. If the garbage bin will be freestanding, look at the space and consider how large the bin can be.
Key Feature #3: Designs and Materials
You need a material that your pooch will not destroy in a few minutes. Materials that can’t easily be scratched or chewed through by your dog are great, such as stainless steel. No matter how much your pup tries to chew or scratch through the trash can, he should not be able to gain access when using a strong material.
The design also plays a big role in dog-proof trash cans. Lids that do not fix to the body are a definite no-no. Preferably look for a bin that has a lid lock and is opened with a foot pedal. Other design features to keep an eye out for are non-slip bases, motion sensors, and a tight-fitting lid (if it is not heavy).
Key Feature #4: Lid Types
There are 4 main types of trash can lids:
Lift top – This type of lid is manually lifted to dispose of your trash. They are typically hinged on one side.
Swing top – This type of lid lifts on one side when you push down on the other to dispose of trash. This type of lid is often messy and the trash stops disposal once it reaches a certain level as the lid presses against it when you push down.
Step to open – This type of lid opens when the foot pedal is stepped on. The mechanism between the pedal and the lid pulls the lid up as the pedal moves down. These are great if you have a dog that loves digging in the trash can.
Touch free – This type of lid uses a motion sensor to open the lid. They are great for hygienic purposes and make it hard for your pooch to get into the bin.
Key Feature #5: Shape of the Bin
Some trash cans are semi-circular in shape, while others are rectangular or circular. Look at what will suit your kitchen best. If you will be placing the can against a wall, a semi-circular or rectangular bin may be best as the wall provides additional support. If you are putting the can in a corner, a circular can at an angle will suit you well.
Dog Proof Trash Can FAQs
Question 1: What size trash can for is best for my kitchen?
Most standard kitchen trash cans are 13 gallons. A 13 gallon bin is normally suitable for a 4 person family. If there are just 2 people living in your home, an 11 gallon trash can is the minimum size you should use.
Question 2: How do I keep a dog out of the trash can?
If you are trying to keep your dog out of the trash can, here are a few tips that may help you:
Keep your pup out of the kitchen: When you first get your dog, train him to stay out of the kitchen. Until he has learned to stay out, use a baby gate or close the door to restrict his access.
Install a closed cabinet: If you are unable to keep your dog out of the kitchen, as it is where he sleeps at night or for any other reason, place your bin in a closed cabinet and install child-locks to the door.
Provide other entertainment: Typically, dogs scratch through the trash because they are bored. Provide your pooch with chew toys and bones to keep him engaged and away from the garbage.
Question 3: How do I clean a trash can?
Pull on a pair of rubber gloves and empty the trash can, removing any food particles. Wash out your trash can. If you have a garden hose, wash it outside; otherwise do it in the bathtub or shower. Pat the bin dry with paper towels. Spray a liberal amount of disinfectant on the inside, outside, bottom, and top of the can. Don’t forget the lid. Use a nylon bristle brush to scrub the trash can thoroughly. Once you have scrubbed it, let it sit with the disinfectant on for 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Dry the entire trash can with a towel or air dry in sunlight.
Question 4: Where should I put a trash can in my kitchen?
Depending on the size and design of your kitchen, you may be confused about where to put your trash can. Typically, the closest spot to your food preparation area would be best. You can choose to either place it in a closet, trash drawer, or leave it out if space permits. Remember to always place it somewhere out of your way so you do not knock it over.
Question 5: How does a step trash can work?
A step trash can is a touchless bin that does not require you to touch it to open it. You open the lid by stepping on the foot pedal. When you do this, it pulls the mechanism at the back in a downwards motion, causing the bin lid to pull up and open.
Keeping your pooch out of your trash can is often a frustrating endeavor. It is not necessary to have a Fort Knox-styled trash can to keep your dog from tearing through the garbage. By using one of the above reviewed trash cans, you can lock away your trash in a way that looks good and keeps Fido out.
While all of the trash cans on our list are great, our favorite is the Simplehuman 13 Gallon Step Trash Can for a few reasons. The durable plastic build and the strong, locking lid are naturally two big plusses in our column. We also love the 13 gallon capacity and high quality stainless steel pedal that opens and closes the lid quietly. It is also easy to clean, making it a breeze to keep your dog out of the garbage while keeping your kitchen hygienic and tidy.
